Inventory and Uniform Capitalization
Learn the decision pattern the exam can test, then apply it to a realistic taxpayer fact pattern.
What changes the answer?
Paying a cost does not automatically make it a current deduction when it creates or supports inventory.
A tax-practice scenario
A producer pays storage, handling, and indirect labor costs. Classify each cost under the applicable inventory framework.
Identify the taxpayer, entity, transaction, and tax period first. Write the controlling tests in order, apply only the relevant facts, and keep the reporting result separate from any planning recommendation.
Do not take this shortcut.
Expensing every indirect cost because it does not appear on a supplier invoice.
Turn the rule into recall.
Map costs to acquiring, producing, storing, selling, or administering before choosing treatment.
